Membership FAQs

Who is the Institute for?
The Institute is for anyone who has an interest in assessment. There are different grades of membership ranging from an Affiliate member (someone who has an interest in assessment issues) to a Fellow (an assessor with more than five years' assessment experience).

How much does membership cost?
Fees depend upon the grade at which you wish to join. You can find up-to-date details of our fees in our membership section.

What are the benefits of membership?
By joining the Institute, members will be able to develop a better knowledge of assessment as well as having improved access to best practice in assessment and networking opportunities. The Institute will also provide access to events, research papers and qualifications in assessment.

What are the criteria for membership?
The criteria for membership differ depending on the grade at which you'd like to enter. For example, to become an Affiliate member all you need is to have an interest in assessment where as to become a Fellow of the Institute you'll need to have significant experience as a senior examiner/manager.

I am currently an assessor for one of the awarding bodies. Do I have to be a member of the Institute if I want to continue as an assessor?
No, you will be able to examine if you are not a member, although we would encourage all examiners to join up to benefit from the services and support offered by the Institute.

Will members of the Institute be able to command higher fees for marking papers?
No, although by receiving access to increased support, best practice guidance and high quality professional development, Institute members may well be able to mark papers more efficiently and effectively.
