Are you receiving regular e-communications from the CIEA? Some email providers have recently changed their email filter settings which read any emails received from unknown senders as spam. If you have received this issue of CIEAMAIL it is likely that no action is required, however we do recommend that you add mail@ciea.org.uk to your address book. If you have any queries regarding this then please contact your email service provider. In January we sent out our first 'CIEA - Your Call to Action!' email and the response received was phenomenal. Over 200 members volunteered to 'test-drive' a new CPD tool that we hope to develop later in the year. The tool will enable members to evidence their assessment-related experience to gain higher membership grades, gain anonymous peer-review and revalidate Chartered Educational Assessor status. If you have already registered an interest in the new tool no action is required. If, however you have not done so please email info@ciea.org.uk with the words 'CPD Test Drive' in the subject.
The spring edition of Make the Grade magazine will land (if it has not already done so) on your doorstep within the next week or so and as always the magazine includes a number of expert reviews and articles on assessment practice from some of the country's leading practitioners some of which have been featured below.

This month's poll (included in our new monthly 'CIEA: Your Call to Action!' email) looked at the new government pilot project of testing, Single Level Tests (SLTs). The results from the survey show that 63% of members who responded feel that SLTs will provide a more accurate measure of a pupils' ability. However, when asked if members felt equipped with the assessment skills required to work under a system of single level testing over 40% responded that they did not feel well equipped to support these types of test. The results from this month's and all previous months' member polls can be found below by following this link.

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has contracted Edexcel to recruit markers for the 2009 key stage 2 national curriculum test cycle. Markers have the crucial role of ensuring tests are marked consistently and according to the mark scheme, in addition to completing quality control checks and returning marked scripts by the deadline. All markers receive training and the support of a supervisor throughout the marking cycle. As a result of the announcement made on 14 October 2008 by the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, key stage 3 national curriculum tests are no longer statutory, therefore markers for these tests are not required. We do, however, welcome applications from qualified teachers who wish to mark key stage 2 national curriculum tests.
Why become a national curriculum tests marker? As a key stage 2 marker, your professional knowledge will ensure that the high standard of marking that is applied to national curriculum tests is maintained. You will also gain valuable insight into what pupils need to succeed in national curriculum tests, so you learn while you earn. Furthermore, the skills and experience gained will contribute to your professional development and can advance your teaching career. You will also have the opportunity to broaden your professional network by meeting other markers. To register your interest in becoming a national curriculum tests marker, please complete Edexcel's application form Let us know what you think of the e-newsletter and any features you'd like to see in future issues. If you're feeling creative and would like to contribute an article, please send an email to info@ciea.org.uk. Until next time...
