Dr Steven Coombs, Chair of the Professional Master's Programme at Bath Spa University, says: "By working closely with the CIEA to launch this Professional Master's Programme, Bath Spa University's School of Education is demonstrating its responsiveness to the needs of the education and training profession. The qualification is very timely, as it will provide a range of benefits to both secondary school teachers and FE college lecturers alike; allowing them to oversee the quality assurance of project work completed in schools and colleges as part of the new National Curriculum initiative and the new Diploma awards. Institute News - CIEA & Teachers' TV team up to promote good assessment practice

Earlier in the year the CIEA asked members to submit information and evidence relating to and showing significant improvements in the assessment of core subject topics within their school.

One school, The Hodgson School in Lancashire, appeared to have made remarkable improvements relating to Science GCSE results.

In 2000 the school achieved an 'unsatisfactory and weak' (according to OFSTED) total of 38% A*-C grades in Science; however in 2007 the school managed to turn this around to over 98%. They did this by offering modular BTEC, dual award and triple award and matched pupils to appropriate routes. Teaching and assessment styles were changed dramatically with pupils being given clear objectives and desired outcomes at the start of each lesson. Peer assessment was introduced and assessment information was shared openly and publicly with students and other teachers. This has led to increased motivation amongst students and a more joined-up 'team' effort from the teaching staff.

In light of The Hodgson Schools success, Teachers TV has published a short video that can be viewed by following this link. Watch here...

Institute News - Assessment Policy continued (Steps 10, 11 and 12 of 13)

These steps will help you to set in place the processes to be adopted by the institution as a whole. Step 10 (ratification) needs the Senior Management Team to accept the policy and its procedures. In other words, to accept the policy and put in place a way to monitor (step 11) and evaluate (step 12) the process. The Senior Managers must then put it to the board for formal approval. The policy and the associated procedures can then be communicated to other stakeholders, such as parents, employers, governors and linked institutions.

Speaking at the National Motorcycle Museum in the West Midlands, the new Chair said a review of tests, examinations and teacher assessments would be "at the forefront of our agenda."

An expert panel would be appointed to oversee the work, she told delegates.

The aims and aspirations of the new regulator were all achievable and would benefit learners, Kathleen added.

Assessment News - Pupils could be asked to sign exam 'honesty codes'

The Independent, Wednesday, 25th June 2008

Pupils, aged 7, could be asked to sign exam 'honesty codes'

Children as young as seven could be asked to sign "honesty codes" at their schools in a plan to cut down on cheating in national curriculum tests and exams.

The "honesty codes" system, widely in use in the United States, could be introduced in primary as well as secondary schools, and universities, to stamp out plagiarism and cheating, said Isabel Nisbet, acting chief executive of Ofqual, the school exams watchdog. Parents would be sent a letter spelling out unacceptable behaviour in exams, under the proposals.

Pupils leaving the exam hall on Wednesday morning had to be hurried away from the affected area and all classroom windows were shut.
