The CIEA is delighted to support Bath Spa University in its Continuing Professional Development Programme offering a credit based route to MA or MTeach. Students can exit with a PG Cert, PG Dip or MA/MTeach with 60, 120 or 180 credits respectively, but first need to complete research modules and a dissertation for the final 90 credits if they want to complete the MA or MTeach. Dr Steven Coombs, Chair of the Professional Master's Programme at Bath Spa University, says: "By working closely with the CIEA to launch this Professional Master's Programme, Bath Spa University's School of Education is demonstrating its responsiveness to the needs of the education and training profession. The qualification is very timely, as it will provide a range of benefits to both secondary school teachers and FE college lecturers alike; allowing them to oversee the quality assurance of project work completed in schools and colleges as part of the new National Curriculum initiative and the new Diploma awards. Headteachers and Principals should welcome this new Continuous Professional Development (CPD) opportunity."
The CIEA will help to provide support for all consortia wishing to improve internal assessment in line with the requirements of the diploma. The CIEA has also published the 'Supporting Diploma Assessment' booklet which outlines specific resources available from the CIEA to help centres deliver effective internal assessment.

Earlier in the year the CIEA asked members to submit information and evidence relating to and showing significant improvements in the assessment of core subject topics within their school. One school, The Hodgson School in Lancashire, appeared to have made remarkable improvements relating to Science GCSE results. In 2000 the school achieved an 'unsatisfactory and weak' (according to OFSTED) total of 38% A*-C grades in Science; however in 2007 the school managed to turn this around to over 98%. They did this by offering modular BTEC, dual award and triple award and matched pupils to appropriate routes. Teaching and assessment styles were changed dramatically with pupils being given clear objectives and desired outcomes at the start of each lesson. Peer assessment was introduced and assessment information was shared openly and publicly with students and other teachers. This has led to increased motivation amongst students and a more joined-up 'team' effort from the teaching staff. In light of The Hodgson Schools success, Teachers TV has published a short video that can be viewed by following this link. Watch here...

Pupils could be asked to sign exam 'honesty codes'
Pupils, aged 7, could be asked to sign exam 'honesty codes' Children as young as seven could be asked to sign "honesty codes" at their schools in a plan to cut down on cheating in national curriculum tests and exams. The "honesty codes" system, widely in use in the United States, could be introduced in primary as well as secondary schools, and universities, to stamp out plagiarism and cheating, said Isabel Nisbet, acting chief executive of Ofqual, the school exams watchdog. Parents would be sent a letter spelling out unacceptable behaviour in exams, under the proposals.
BBC News, Thursday, 5th June 2008 More than 2,000 honeybees swarmed on a lamppost at Emmanuel College in Gateshead, forcing the school to cordon off the quad and call a beekeeper. Pupils leaving the exam hall on Wednesday morning had to be hurried away from the affected area and all classroom windows were shut.
