Institute News - Top UK Universities to offer new masters in assessment

The CIEA has significantly furthered the professionalisation of assessment by strategically bringing together leading UK universities to offer the world's first Master Degree in Assessment. Some of the UK's top universities, including Bath Spa University, Durham University, University of Leeds, Warwick University, Swansea Metropolitan University and the Institute of Education, will now offer an MA in Assessment to students. Bath Spa will be the first to offer the new MA this September, while the other universities will follow in September 2009.

Graham Herbert, says: "We are absolutely delighted with the responses we have had so far from this prestigious list of universities and we welcome Bath Spa University's spearheading of the programme's roll-out this September. Assessment is too often seen as the poor relation to teaching and learning. For example, the average teacher receives just five hours of assessment training as part of a nine-month PGCE course. At the same time Ofsted cites assessment as one of the most variable factors impacting upon school performance. In order to ensure quality assessment in schools and colleges, teachers and lecturers need a deeper understanding of more effective assessment practice. The MA programme will provide this."

Institute News - Oral Language Modifier training events review

The trial events took place in Birmingham, Leeds, London and Manchester in late April and early May. The events were used to validate those Oral Language Modifier's (OLMs) who could give evidence of understanding the issues relating to the use of an OLM in an examination. Almost 200 people took part in the training. These ranged from those who had worked with the hearing impaired (HI) in the past to those who had never encountered this kind of arrangement before.

Institute News - Assessment Policy continued (Step 9 of 13)

This step will help you to decide how effective you are as an individual and suggest areas for CPD or personal development.

Team assessment

As well as managing ones own assessment practices, the assessor needs to be part of an effectively functioning team. How this can be achieved within the institution needs to be made explicit both across the institution and within the subject area context.

This too can be set out as a grid that will allow individuals to add this to their personal grid as shown in step 8.
To view an example grid please follow this link: Find out more .
