Institute News - Assessment Conference in Naples

The Chair of the IEA, Kathleen Tattersall recently travelled to Naples to attend the Assessment Europe Conference to represent and present our Institute of Educational Assessors.

This year's conference theme, Assessment and Equity, was appropriate to all types of assessment - national, externally set tests as well as assessment by teachers. All of us are aware that some tests favour males rather than females while course work would seem more biased in favour of females. Clearly a balanced approach to assessment is needed to ensure that the assessment regime is fair and to mitigate any unintended effects of the chosen testing instruments. Putting all the eggs into one basket will inevitably favour one group over another.

The criteria for these grades will be matched against the roles and competencies that are mapped out in the IEA Professional Framework. Associate members of the IEA that have already expressed an interest in Member or Fellow status will automatically receive information in due course.

Further information will appear on the website and in IEAMail.

Assessment News - What is teacher assessment?

The term 'teacher assessment' is most frequently used to refer to a type of assessment that is less formalised than coursework assessment. The term implies that teachers carry out teacher assessment in the course of their normal teaching activities, rather than as a separate activity.

Assessment News - Exam Policy

The NAA has launched a new tool that enables exams officers in schools and colleges to quickly and easily generate an exam policy. The exam policy generator tool takes the hard work out of creating an exam policy. It takes you through a series of questions covering typical exam policy scenarios and allows you to select from a range of answers. The tool then generates your customised exam policy as a Word document that you can edit further if needed.

There are specific versions of the policy tool for 11-16, 11-19 and FE centres.

Assessment News - And Finally...

Daily Mail - 2 November 2006

Pupils in Scotland are being allowed to use "Text-Speak", the language used for mobile phone messages, in GCSE examinations.

Examiners, moderators and markers have been told not to penalise students who use text-speak, providing they get the answer right. Jargon would not get top marks, but would still be accepted in Standard Grade English exams in Scotland.
