CIEA focuses on promoting good Assessment for Learning (AfL) Practice

The CIEA recently partnered with the Association for Achievement and Improvement through Assessement (AAIA) and the Council for Subject Associations (CfSA) to compile an AfL good practice advice sheet for Primary Schools.

Every Primary School in England will receive a copy of the advice sheet and it will shortly feature on the CIEA website. Content will include:

- An overview of the ten Principles of AfL
- Practical tips and advice

- A four week free membership trial for schools/colleges

Membership Manager, Richard Gott, commented 'The advice sheet is not only a great resource for primary schools but it shows how three professional membership organisations can work in collaboration to promote good assessment practice. We look forward to working closely with AAIA and the CfSA on more projects in the future'.

Ofsted annual report highlights weaknesses in assessment

You may be interested to hear that the 2008/09 Annual Report is now available on the Ofsted website.

We have summarised the assessment-related findings for you below.

Initial teacher education key findings:

Trainees' use of assessment is the least well developed of their competencies and this is critical for achieving good progress for pupils.

Teaching and learning summary:

Effective assessment for learning, in which teachers rapidly adjust what they are doing in response to their assessment of pupils' learning, is a vital ingredient in good teaching. However, it is still not consistently embedded across phases and subjects and it remains a comparative weakness in provision.

Have your say regarding new National Occupational Standards

The CIEA are members of Lifelong Learning UKs project board which is currently reviewing the National Occupational Standards for Learning & Development. The standards were last updated by ENTO in 2001 and the suite is being reviewed to ensure they are 'fit for purpose' and still reflect the functions for which they were written.

To take part in an online consultation regarding the new draft standards or to attend an event to dicuss these, click here.
