Institute News - New assessment qualification reinforces teachers' skills

The Chartered Educational Assessor (CEA) pilot has left teachers feeling "empowered" and "liberated" and finding assessment more "manageable", according to an independent evaluation of the pilot released by the CIEA.

85% of teaching staff involved in the pilot agree or strongly agree that assessment practices have improved as a direct result of the CEA pilot, while 80% say overall teaching and learning has been given a boost by it.

Furthermore, 92% of assessors taking part in the CEA pilot said that it had improved perceptions of assessment within schools. Assessors testified to teachers' more "targeted and confident approach to assessment".

Institute News - Trustee Nominations update

The CIEA would like to thank those of you who nominated yourselves for the opportunity to become a member of the Board of Trustees of the CIEA. The next phase of the nominations process will be to vote the nominees into office. If there is a requirement to vote for Trustees then all voting members will be contacted and invited to vote for their preferred Trustees.

The new Trustees will be announced at the CIEAs Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held at the CIEA National Assessment Conference in the summer 2009.

Institute News - Personalised Learning - A Practical Guide

Following the launch of the Assessment for Learning Strategy in May 2008, the DCSF has now developed Personalised Learning - A Practical Guide. The easy-to-use guide is designed to help school leaders, School Improvement Partners and teachers to explore key aspects of personalised teaching and learning and aims to support schools in moving to a system based on progression, underpinned by accurate assessment for learning as well as supporting pupils.

Each key aspect has a rationale which draws out its particular contribution to personalised learning, and a section on 'How to do this well'. There are case studies to illustrate the aspects and each chapter has a 'Developing practice checklist' to help schools prioritise their development needs. The guide also identifies sources of further support and provides useful links to publications and resources.

Personalised Learning - A Practical Guide is available to download or order from Teachernet using reference DCSF-00844-2008DOM-EN

Assessment News - Update on national curriculum tests

Ed Balls announced that externally marked Key Stage 2 tests were critically important and would continue as the key source of information for parents and the public about standards in primary schools - with 'single level' tests remaining a potential alternative for tests at age 11 in the future.

He announced that he was ending schools' requirement to run national tests for 14 year olds, with immediate effect. The current compulsory national tests at the end of Key Stage 3 will be replaced by improved classroom assessment by teachers and frequent reporting to parents in years 7, 8 and 9, with a stronger focus on one-to-one tuition and catch up support for children in the first years of secondary school.
