The DfE

The Department for Education (DfE) was formed on 12 May 2010 and is responsible for education and children's services.

This aim translates to three key objectives:

  • Give children an excellent start in education so that they have a better foundation for future learning.
  • Enable all young people to develop and to equip themselves with the skills, knowledge and personal qualities needed for life and work.
  • Encourage and enable adults to learn, improve their skills and enrich their lives.

To achieve these objectives, the Department has developed and put in place a wide-ranging policy programme as well as demanding targets against which to measure progress and achievement.
