Who should consider using the Compendium?
Assessors wishing to improve their assessment skills:
The Summative Assessment Compendium is for use by individual assessors who wish to improve their skills and capabilities. Below is a case study showing how one individual used the Compendium.
It is also for Heads of Departments and Faculties to enable them to point team members in the right direction when skill gaps have been identified within a member of the assessment team. You will also find a case study showing how a Faculty Head used the Compendium to improve the skills of one of her team members.
Faculty/Department Heads who conduct formal staff appraisals/annual reviews:
Together the Compendium and Framework can help add structure and complement existing procedures when appraising and formulating action plans for staff members.
Case study
Sue Hodgson is working as a Head of Subject within the local Primary School. She has a competent team of seven teachers who are involved with the assessment of literacy. However, she is keen for them to improve their assessment-based knowledge and skills. Sue decides that in their next round of annual reviews she will review their assessment-based competencies by using the CIEA Professional Framework and will address developmental needs by referring to the compendium to create Action Plans for each one of them.
One member of the team needs to work on his moderation techniques, so Sue uses the section, Conducting Assessment. Another member of the team needs to improve the quality of the feedback she gives to both her students, in the form of what they must do to improve their grades, and to the rest of the team members, in the form of well analysed data containing recommendations for action. Here, Sue uses the section Feeding Back after Assessment.
