CPD opportunities for teachers at all career stages

teacher helping a pupil

This section of the website communicates how the CIEA can offer support and professional development opportunities in assessment at all career stages.

The CIEA is well placed to support teachers in:

  • developing and extending their knowledge, skill and capability in good assessment practice
  • gaining recognition of their assessment competence which they can use to support their careers in teaching.

The CIEA offers a range of services and support for professionals involved in assessment which include:

  • Membership designations which are conferred based on the competency of the individual in delivering good assessment practice (at one of 5 'grades' from Student to Fellow). Member services and benefits include access to a growing body of knowledge, information, tools and resources for maintaining capability in assessment delivered through the CIEA's website, quarterly magazine and annual conference
  • Continuing professional development (CPD)  which includes opportunities for upgrading membership, developing practice, as well as tools for planning and recording CPD activities.
  • Qualifications which will be open to teachers and which the CIEA is currently developing, including Masters degrees in assessment available at six leading universities and a certificate in assessment practice.
  • Chartered Educational Assessor status achieved through qualifications and proof of relevant assessment capability.
  • Training courses either geared to achieving the qualifications in assessment or simply to help teachers and assessors improve aspects of assessment practice.
  • An inclusive School or college membership programme designed to develop consistent assessment practice across subject areas, which enables free and unlimited access to the School and College Member Area on the CIEA website, copies of the termly magazine (Make the Grade), monthly e-newsletter CIEAMAIL, and status-driven benefits that include an attractive certificate of membership and online listing.

In providing professional development and support in assessment practice for teachers, the CIEA will be complimenting TDA's remit to ensure high quality teaching and learning in every classroom by securing a sufficient supply of new teachers and effective continuing professional development.  As the national agency and recognised sector body responsible for the training and development of the school workforce, TDA has developed with social partners the Professional Standards for Teachers which provides a structure for identifying and providing CPD opportunities.
