Supporting the teaching career
A crucial component in demonstrating the relevance of assessment to teachers is to show how assessment fits with the teaching career.
Typical career paths are illustrated in Figure 2 which shows the stages of the teaching career in pale yellow and of the assessment career in darker yellow. The teacher's role incorporates both teaching and assessment and is therefore shown in graduated pale and darker yellow as a 'Classroom Assessment Practitioner'.
Figure 2 - Career paths in teaching and assessment
The CIEA has a number of key roles to play in supporting the teaching and assessment careers.
- Providing recognition and accreditation for teachers who attain the levels of experience and competence required for membership or designation as a Chartered Educational Assessor the highest professional designation in assessment.
- Providing qualifications, training and development in assessment to help teachers perform assessment more effectively within and across subject domains in a place of learning.
- Promoting assessment as a distinct area of practice that provides vital support for teaching and learning. This is essential to get schools and teachers to invest in assessment practice at the start and throughout their careers.
Teachers who are able to provide evidence of their experience and, where appropriate, their contribution in assessment will be eligible to join the CIEA at the relevant level. The CIEA's membership grades* are shown Figure 3 relative to the typical stage in the teaching career.
