Accountable officer

Responsibilities

The QCA Code of Practice requires each awarding body to appoint an accountable officer who shall have responsibility for the quality and standards of all its qualifications. This named person is responsible to the awarding body's governing council for ensuring that awarding body personnel take all necessary action to maintain parity of standards in each subject (e.g. Mathematics) and in each qualification (e.g. GCSE) from year to year, across specifications and also with other awarding bodies. The accountable officer must also ensure that the awarding body complies with the requirements of the QCA Code of Practice and any other relevant regulations. It is the accountable officer who considers the provisional grade recommendations submitted by chairs of examiners after awarding committee meetings and then sets the final grade boundaries for each specification.

The accountable officer is also responsible for ensuring that the awarding body participates in appropriate comparability and monitoring activities, both internally and externally organised activities, and for making sure that any changes that are shown to be necessary by such activities are carried out.
