Reviser

Role

A reviser receives early drafts of question papers or assessment tasks and their associated provisional mark schemes. The reviser reviews this material and provices a set of comments for consideration by the principal examiner responsible for the assessment. The comments address the acceptability of the draft assessment as a whole, the suitability of individual questions and the appropriateness of the suggested responses and the marking procedures set out in the mark scheme. The reviser checks that the assessment successfully addresses the appropriate assessment objectives, that the subject content is appropriate to the specification and that the wording of the questions is clear and accessible to the candidates for whom it is intended. The reviser may suggest alternative wordings to some questions for consideration by the principal examiner.

How many revisers?

The awarding body appoints at least one reviser for each externally assessed component of a specification. Each reviser may review more than one draft assessment and may, in some cases, review all the components in a specification. The reviser(s) attend the question paper evaluation committee meeting at which the draft assessments are reviewed, together with the relevant reviser's comments.

Qualifications

A reviser is normally a subject expert who is familiar with the requirements of the specification concerned and its components and has considerable experience in assessment. Revisers are often, or have been, senior examiners for the specification concerned.
