Institute News - Gained Qualified Teacher Status and interested in assessment-related CPD?

Start your teaching career with a recognised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme.

The Institute of Educational Assessors (IEA) and the General Teaching Council (GTC) are pleased to announce the launch of a pilot project that will enable IEA members, who have recently gained Qualified Teacher Status, to gain Teacher Learning Academy (TLA) Stage 1 professional recognition.

Why should I register an interest?

As well as ensuring your skills are maintained at the highest level by undertaking formalised CPD, this structured system of development allows you to continue to benefit from the experience and knowledge of senior professionals in your centre of learning who will coach you to ensure your learning is optimised to enable you continue to develop your teaching and assessment skills. Institute News - Congratulations on GCSE's 20th Anniversary

"Technology-smart teenagers have impressed 92 per cent of employers with their IT skills to the extent that the employers concede that they themselves are often outclassed in this crucial area of modern industrial intellect, according to a recent survey published by the CBI," says Kathleen Tattersall, Chair of the Institute of Educational Assessors, on the 20th anniversary of the first GCSE examinations in 1988.

Institute News -Class of 52 and 54 - Could have done better

"A-level examinations make greater demands on students today than was ever the case," says Kathleen Tattersall, Chair of the Institute of Educational Assessors.

"Syllabuses now demand skills and knowledge which were once the exclusive preserve of the university sector, examined through sophisticated and well researched assessment techniques which give more information about the overall abilities of our young people - in this modern day - than was ever the case through the hit-or miss one-type-fits-all essay approach of years gone by."

Access to General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations for students with special educational needs: what is 'best practice'?

British Journal of Special Education: Jun2007, Vol. 34 Issue 2, p89-95

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, recent guidance on access arrangements for students with special educational needs taking public examinations such as the end-of-school General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) has signalled a commitment to the development of access arrangements in line with 'best practice'. In this article, Kevin Woods, from the Educational Support and Inclusion section of the School of Education at the University of Manchester, provides a relevant evaluation of access arrangements for GCSE examinations using questionnaire feedback from 205 specialist teachers involved in their implementation. The findings are that the system for allocating access arrangements is considered 'manageable' by 20% of teachers and 'fair' by only 25% of teachers; 70% of teachers would consider extension of access arrangements to be appropriate, notwithstanding resource constraints.

Institute News -The Examination Process Explained

Stage 7 - Awarding Bodies

Once satisfied with the marks and grades awarded, the awarding bodies send the results to the examination centres who then distribute them to their students. If candidates have an enquiry about their results, they can ask their centre to contact the awarding body on their behalf. This can include asking for their marked exam scripts back, a copy of the mark scheme, or even a remark.

Remarking and Appeals

If a candidate seriously believes that they have received an unfair result, then they may ask their examination centre to query the relevant awarding body. They can request a clerical check on examiners' totalling or ask for a remark by a different examiner. If these measures don't resolve the query, it may be referred to the awarding body's Appeals Panel. If there is still no resolution, the case may then be taken to the independent Examinations Appeals Board.

Exam cheat probe into hidden earpieces

Teenagers may be using James Bond-style hidden earpieces to cheat in school exams, the Government's exam watchdog has warned. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority is investigating concerns that students could be using the devices to communicate with accomplices who supply them with answers.

The wireless earpiece is so small it cannot be easily seen. Students using the device in an exam hall could be silently called on their mobile phone by an accomplice outside while they could talk back to them via a tiny microphone sensitive enough to pick up whispers.
