New -Interested in Assessment Research?

The IEA has collaborated with the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) and would like to offer members the opportunity to contribute to assessment focused research. We are keen to draw upon the knowledge and expertise of our members in developing assessment tools and resources for those involved in educational assessment. Institute News - Free Membership Extended!

The IEA is pleased to announce that members will be able to enjoy an extension of our free membership offer period until May 2008. The IEA will be launching both Member and Fellow grades in May 2007. These levels of membership will also be free until May 2008.

Institute News - IEA Responds to DFES Proposals

The IEA welcomes the opportunity to respond to proposals from DfES to support the summative Key Stages with formative progress checks carried out during the Key Stage in the classroom.

There is much in the document which we welcome, particularly the emphasis on personalised learning and effective assessment for learning. The Institute's own objective is to ensure that teachers and others acquire the skills and qualities, which they need to be effective assessors. However we have some real concerns over the delivery and direction of this proposed policy.

Institute News - CPD Forum

The IEA recently held a Continual Professional Development (CPD) forum. The CPD forum included 40 professional membership organisations who focused on developing a programme of development in-line with the proposed IEA Chartered Assessor. Institute News - Education and Inspections Act Conference

The IEA attended the Education and Inspections Act conferences as the Lead Exhibitor. This was a timely opportunity for the IEA to meet and speak with individuals that are at the forefront of change within the educational community. This also helped to raise awareness of the IEA and explain our role within assessment.

If you were sent a Tax Return by 31 October 2006 the deadline for sending back your completed 2005-06 Tax Return is this Wednesday (31st Jan).

The helpline is manned by a team of qualified advisors drawn from accountancy, legal and other backgrounds, and is available between 9:00am and 5:00pm, Monday to Friday, with the exception of Bank Holidays. To access this service call 0870 164 8050.

Student News - First Steps in Assessment

Last month the IEA announced the launch of the Student Members Area, specifically for Student Members who are studying towards their PGCE, B.Ed or M.Ed. The first in a number of publications aimed specifically for Students has been launched. First Steps in Assessment is aimed at developing the skills and competencies of Students and explains what they need to know to start their assessment careers. Each month the IEA communicates educational assessment focused events and training courses that are taking place around the UK.

The e-Assessment Question

The Education Show

The IEA will be exhibiting for the third year running at the Education Show, on the 22nd - 24th March 2007 at the NEC Birmingham. IEA members are entitled to free tickets to the show, to obtain these please email info@ioea.org.uk stating your name and membership number.

We are also taking bookings from members who would like the opportunity to speak with an IEA representative, you can also pop along and speak with us, we can be found at stand G82. Further details regarding bookings will be communicated through our website http://www.ioea.org.uk/.

Members should be aware that the IEA is only communicating these events to its members and not endorsing them.

Assessment News - And Finally...

A unitary awarding body is to take tough new measures to prevent pupils from gaining prior knowledge of exam questions. Radio transmitters and timed locks are to be introduced to packages containing exam papers before being sent to schools. They have also proposed to provide all schools with details of every pupil's performance on every exam question tackled which can then be cross referenced with results from other schools.
