Oral Language Modifier (OLM) Training

The CIEA has changed the format of the Oral Language Modifier (OLM) training with exceptional results. The training looks closely at the use of language in general qualifications as well as the use of the JCQ regulations relating to candidates needing access arrangements or reasonable adjustments in General Qualifications.

The next event will take place on December 13th at Wokingham. If you would like to attend the course, contact Julius Lang at: Julius.Lang@ciea.org.uk. Further details about the course can be found at: http://www.ciea.org.uk/training_and_qualifications/OLM_training.aspx

Assessment Skills Gap Analysis

One of the most popular tools in the CIEA repertoire of assessment skills support is the Assessment Skills Gap Analysis tool (ASGA). You can use this to help you to determine your current levels of skill as well as helping you to decide what to do next to improve your skill level and make life easier for yourself in your chosen profession. ASGA is an interactive tool that allows you to determine your level of competency against a known standard, described in the CIEA Professional Framework. You can access the tool by following the link:

Chartered Educational Assessor (CEA) Case Studies

New case studies have been added to the CEA case study file. These case studies represent a cross-section of portfolios that have been submitted to the CIEA as part of the CEA programme. Those added include a secondary school that is fed by four separate feeder middle schools and has to quality assure the assessment of its year 9 intake. Another looks at a large primary school in a deprived inner city area introducing Assessment for Learning across the school.  To access the CEA case studies, follow the link:

The new Teacher's standards, accepted by the government in September now require teachers to fulfil the following functions:

  • . Make accurate and productive use of assessment
  • . Know and understand how to assess the relevant subject and curriculum areas, including statutory assessment requirements
  • . Make use of formative and summative assessment to secure pupils' progress
  • . Use relevant data to monitor progress, set targets, and plan subsequent lessons
  • . Give pupils regular feedback, both orally and through accurate marking, and encourage pupils to respond to the feedback.

Training and Qualifications

New Courses

You have shown a lot of interest in the two new courses that we have developed:

General Assessment Skills for practitioners

Assessment Skills for Managers

You can now find course details on the website along with a variety of ways of accessing the training.

To access the details of both courses go to the following links:

General assessment Skills: http://www.ciea.org.uk/training_and_qualifications/assessment_skills_course.aspx

Assessment Skills for Managers: http://www.ciea.org.uk/training_and_qualifications/assessment_skills_for_managers_course.aspx

All of the training packages we offer can be tailored to suit the needs of you as individuals or you working within an institution. You may find it more cost effective to join with another group of people or another institution. You may want these courses delivered in a single day. However, you may want them delivered in twilight sessions on a succession of nights or a succession of weeks. If you contact us we will be able to suggest a pattern that will suit your particular circumstances. We know that such training will add value and make your life as a professional assessor easier and improve the quality of outcomes for your learners.

CEA Training

The dates for CEA training in 2012 have been announced. The role of the CEA is to quality assure the assessment processes that a school or college, a local authority or the workplace uses. The two day training involves separate workshops which cover the key principles of assessment. Delegates then work on an individual project of their own choice, finally submitting a portfolio to be assessed. For further details click here:
