Post-nominals (letters after your name)

Using Institute letters after your name & how it can benefit you

As an educational assessor, membership of the CIEA is proof that you operate at the highest professional standards, and that you have satisfied the Institute's strict qualifications and experience requirements. This page introduces the use of letters after your name, or post-nominals, and explains how it can be of practical use to members.

Members of the Institute are entitled to use the CIEA letters after their names -

Associates are eligible to use the letters ACIEA after their name. Members will be eligible to use the letters MCIEA after their name, and Fellows will be able to use the letters FCIEA after their name.

Students or Affiliate members are not allowed to use any post-nominals in connection with their Institute membership.

In practice this can work accordingly - John Stevens has a Bachelor of Arts degree, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and has just joined the Institute as an Associate Member. He can therefore use the title - John Stevens BA PGCE ACIEA

The case studies below have been formulated to highlight how the Institute's post-nominals can be used and how it can be of benefit to members -

Example 1 - Differentiating your Curriculum Vitae
Roger Blakeney MCIEA submitted what he thought was the perfect CV for an examiner job that he saw advertised. Unbeknown to him three other would-be examiners applied for exactly the same post. All three had exactly the same qualifications and experience. As a Full Member of the Institute, Roger was entitled to use the post nominals after his name and this differentiated his application from the rest.

Example 2 - Instilling stakeholder confidence
Sue Edwards is the Principal of a large college based in Manchester. She has taken the decision to publish an informative document aimed at installing confidence in the quality of her teaching staff. She has taken the decision to profile all department heads, and three of the five are Associate Members of the Institute. Within the final document the individual profiles of the three Associate Members incorporated the ACIEA post nominals. Sue believed this would only help to bolster her bid to increase public confidence.

We hope that the CIEA post-nominals will be highly valued by the membership and relied upon by members of the assessment community and the general public, to identify those who practice professionally and operate to the Institute's strict Code of Professional Assessment Practice.
