Increasing your knowledge and understanding of educational assessment

What is the Institute of Educational Assessors (IEA)?
The IEA is a professional body dedicated to supporting the needs of everyone involved in educational assessment, including BEd and PGCE students.

What is the aim of the IEA?
The IEA aims to maintain and improve the quality of assessment in schools and colleges by providing BEd and PGCE students with resources that will both increase and develop knowledge, understanding and capability in all aspects of educational testing and assessment.

How can the IEA help me?
Educational assessment takes place across all of the key-stages and you will be expected to play your part in assessing students, and helping them to learn from day-one. Traditionally a great deal of educational assessment knowledge has been gained within the workplace, however the IEA strongly believes this knowledge should be gained during your PGCE or BEd studies. The IEA is therefore pleased to announce the launch of an assessment-focused package of member benefits aimed specifically for PGCE/BEd students. The specific benefits are outlined later in this document. In the past, knowledge about educational assessment has been gained mainly within the school/college; however the IEA can provide you with access to services, products and resources that can develop your understanding, knowledge and capability of good assessment practice. A list of additional member benefits has been outlined opposite.

Who are our members?
Our members include everyone involved in assessment (including BEd and PGCE students), from senior examiners, moderators and markers to individuals with an interest in or responsibility for assessment in primary schools, secondary schools, colleges, universities, training centres and other educational organisations.

How much does membership cost?
Membership is completely free-ofcharge and without obligation until May 2007. From this date a small membership fee (£10) will be charged in order to cover administration costs.
