2. Who is the Institute for?
CIEA membership is open to everyone with an interest in educational assessment as well as those studying to become teachers, lecturers or workplace assessors. There are different grades of membership ranging from an Affiliate member (someone who has an interest in assessment issues) to a Fellow (an assessor with more than six years' assessment experience). 3. How much does membership cost?
The CIEA is free to join and without obligation until May 2008. From May 2008, fees will depend upon the grade at which you wish to join. You can find up-to-date details of our fees in our membership section. Read more.

4. What are the benefits of membership?
By joining the Institute, members will be able to develop a better knowledge of assessment as well as having improved access to best practice in assessment and networking opportunities. 5. What are the criteria for membership?
The criteria for membership differ depending on the grade at which you are applying for. For example, to become an Affiliate member all you need is to have an interest in assessment where as to become a Fellow of the Institute you'll need to have significant experience as a senior examiner/manager. 6. I am interested in joining the CIEA, how can I apply for membership?

There are two ways in which you can apply for membership of the IEA:

  • Online by following this link. Apply today.
  • By contacting our membership department by calling 0845 672 2123 or by email membership@ciea.org.uk and requesting an application pack.

7. What levels of membership are currently available?
Please visit the Membership Grades web pages within the Membership info section of the website.

The highest grade of membership initially available is that of Associate. Once you application for Associate membership has been granted you will then be able to apply to upgrade your membership to that of Member or Fellow.

8. What documents do I need to submit when applying for membership?
This depends on the membership grade for which you have applied. Please click on the link below that is relevant to the membership grade you have applied:

  • I have applied for Affiliate membership. You do not need to submit any supporting evidence.
  • I have applied for Student membership, what evidence do I need to submit with my application. Find out here.
  • I have applied for Associate membership, what evidence do I need to submit with my application. Find out here.
  • I have applied for Full Member status, what evidence do I need to submit with my application. Find out here.

9. I no longer (for one reason or another) have the required supporting documentation f
or the grade for which I wish to apply. What should I do?

A list of alternative supporting documents can be requested from the Institute. Please email info@ioea.org.uk quoting 'Alternative Supporting Documents' in the subject bar.

10. How do I find out if I am eligible to upgrade my membership status?
On the CIEA's website we have a membership upgrade identification tool that will help you decide upon which grade of membership is most relevant to your current role.

  • I am an Affiliate member and would like to upgrade to Associate status, please follow this link to identify whether you are eligible to upgrade. Find out more.
  • I am a Student member and I have more than 1 year's assessment experience and would like to upgrade to Associate status. Find out more.
  • I am an Associate* member and I have external assesment experience and would like to upgrade my membership status. Find out more.
  • I am a Full Member and would like to upgrade to Fellow status. Find out more.

You can apply online, by post, or via fax.

*If you are an Associate member and have classroom based assessment experience you will be eligible to upgrade to the higher grades of membership later in 2007 once the formative version of the CIEA Professional Framework is launched.

11. What if my experience does not fit the set critieria?
The IEA understands that not all organisations follow the grade structure used by major awarding bodies, so assessors who carry out similar roles at other bodies or institutions are still asked to apply. If you are still unsure whether you are eligible to apply then please e-mail your name, membership number, current role, awarding body/institution name, and length of assessment experience to upgrade@ioea.org.uk

12. Do membership grades change now that the Institute has been granted a Royal Charter?
The grades of membership offered by the institute will remain the same. The main change will involve the post nominals (letters after your name). Below is an example:

  • Associate member - AIEA will change to ACIEA
  • Full Member - MIEA will change to MCIEA
  • Fellow Member - will change to FCIEA

Who do I contact regarding CIEA products and services?
If you would like to find out more information about any of the products or services promoted by the Institute then please follow this link. Read more. If you have a specific query relating to a product or service then please email info@ciea.org.uk.

I would like to be more involved with the Institute's work, who do I need to contact?
If you are interested in becoming involved with assessment related research, you can register an interest through the IEA website. You can do this by following these simple steps:

  • Login as a member
  • Click on amend personal details (under the logout box)
  • Select the option 'assessment related research'
  • Select 'click here to register an interest'

You can also email info@ciea.org.uk and outline the type of involvement you would like to have.

I am currently an assessor for one of the awarding bodies.
Do I have to be a member of the Institute if I want to continue as an assessor?

No, you will be able to examine if you are not a member, although we would encourage all examiners to join up to benefit from the services and support offered by the Institute. To find out more information about membership, please follow this link. Read more.

Will members of the Institute be able to command higher fees for marking papers?
No, although by receiving access to increased support, best practice guidance and high quality professional development, Institute members may well be able to mark papers more efficiently and effectively.

Can I amend my details after already having logged into the site?
There is functionality within the member area of the website that enables you to amend the following:

  • Personal details
  • Employment details
  • Home/work address details
  • Telephone dertails
  • Email address
  • Assessment related details

Will I receive regular updates from the Institute?
If you have successfully applied to be a member then you will receive monthly updates from the CIEA in the form of CIEAMail.
You will also receive, through the post, our termly magazine Make the Grade.
If you are yet to join the CIEA you can express an interest by submitting your email address by following this link.
You will then receive monthly updates on CIEA developments.

I am not receiving CIEAMail or Make the Grade?
If you are not receiving CIEAMail or Make the Grade magazine then please contact the IEA membership department by emailing info@ciea.org.uk
I would like copies of promotional literature. How can this be requested?
If you would like CIEAMail promotional materials to distribute then please email info@ciea.org.uk stating reason for requesting further information, quantities and delivery address.

I have missed an edition of Make the Grade magazine. Can I request a copy?

Membership Queries

Once membership fees have been introduced will we be contacted by the CIEA?
Yes, each member will be sent a letter inviting them to continue with their membership with an outline of fees relevant to their grade of membership.

I have submitted my application and since realised that I have made an error on my application.
Who do I notify?

If you have submitted your application and believe that you have made an error then please email us at application@ciea.org.uk with your name (if online your five-digit reference number: 12XXX) and postcode. A member of the CIEA membership department will be in contact with you.
I have received an email prompting me to activate my online profile. How do I do this?

Step 1 - When will I know if my membership application has been successful?
If you have applied online and you have successfully submitted your application form, you will receive an automated email response that contains your grade of membership applied for and a five-digit reference number (12XXX), see below.If you have a query relating to your online application, please quote this number.

If you have applied by post, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your application . If you have not heard from the Institute within 5 working days then please call 0845 672 2123 or email info@ciea.org.uk

Provided there have been no issues with the supporting documents or the references, you should be granted membership and a Welcome Pack will be sent to you within 3 weeks of applying.

What should I do if I have applied for membership and not heard back
from the Institute within 3 weeks?

If you have applied for membership online and have not received an auto-confirmation email (as above) within 24 hours of submitting your application, please email info@ciea.org.uk. AOL Users may find the auto-confirmation email will arrive later than the stipulated 24 hours.

If you have applied by post and you have not received a confirmation of receipt email from us then please email info@ciea.org.uk.

Step 2 - I have received an email from you informing me that I need to activate my online profile, how do I do this?
You should have received an email similar to the one below. This email contains all of the information that you need to activate your online profile.

Step 3 - The link in the above email will take you to the online activation page within the CIEA website (see below)
The link in the (Welcome email) above email is not working, how can I get to the membership activation page?
If, for some reason, you are unable to access the link within the email, then please go to the member area page as shown below. Here you will see a link that will take you to the online profile activation page (as shown)

You will now be taken to the page below; here you will need to enter the information that was sent to you in the welcome email.

Step 4 - Once you have filled in the correct information into the boxes and clicked on register, you will be taken to the following page

Step 5 - Here you are required, for security reasons, to submit a prompt question and answer. For example; prompt question - surname, answer - smith. If you ever forget your password you will be asked to enter this information, you will then be sent a reminder of your password by email.


Step 6 -
Once you have entered a security prompt question and answer you will be taken through to the page below. Here you are asked to accept the IEA's terms and conditions of membership by ticking the check box (see below). You can also state whether or not you would like to be kept up to date with the latest assessment-related research opportunities (see below)

How can I upgrade my Membership?
Visit the Membership Upgrades web page or call 0845 672 2123 for an Upgrade pack. To access the membership upgrade section of the website you must firstly be logged in as a member.

Whom do I contact regarding my application?
If you have applied to join the Institute of Educational Assessors and you have a query relating to your application please email membership@ciea.org.uk or call 0845 672 2123 .

When logging into the site I receive an error message stating this email account is already in use?
If you are receiving an error message stating that your email account is already in use this may be due to another applicant using your email as their referee's contact. Please email info@ciea.org.uk stating your name and membership number.

I have forgotten my password, how do I retrieve my login details?
If you have forgotten your password you can be sent an email reminder. Underneath the member's login box click on forgotten password that will launch the following screen. Your password will then be sent to you via email.

I have received notification that my application for membership was successful
and I have received my member login details but have yet to receive my welcome pack and certificate?
The CIEA aims to complete applications within 3 weeks from the day of receiving an application. If you have not received your welcome pack and it has passed the 3-week deadline then please email membership@ciea.org.uk stating your name and membership number. A CIEA representative will arrange for a new pack to be distributed.
I have received my welcome pack and certificate that states
I have been granted a different grade of membership to that of which I applied for?

You will only ever receive a welcome pack that relates to your current grade of membership. If you have applied to upgrade your membership then you will receive another welcome pack and certificate that reflects your new grade of membership.
