CIEA media statement calling for independent training for people who set and mark examinations

The organisation that represents people who set and mark examinations has called for all examiners to be independently trained.  The  statement comes on the day that MPs questioned the awarding organisations over revelations in the Daily Telegraph that some training courses have provided information about the topics that will be covered in next year's exams.

Members of the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors (CIEA) include examiners, markers and teachers from across the UK and internationally.

The Chair of the CIEA, Dr John Dunford, said:

"Assessment is a professional skill that is central to the work of teachers. Whether assessment is carried out in school or college during a normal working week, or whether it is part of external examinations, it should be carried out with the highest degree of professionalism and integrity. The Code of Practice of the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors sets this out clearly.

"All markers and examiners working for awarding bodies should be independently trained in assessment skills and principles.

"At every stage of the  examination and awarding process, examiners should avoid conflicts of interest and should act with the utmost probity, as set out in the CIEA Code of Practice."
