The CIEA enjoyed a high number of press references following the Westminster Forums Seminar on Testing and Assessment. During the seminar, the CEO of the Institute, David Wright, recited some research conducted by the CIEA looking into the accuracy of computer based e-assessment systems in the assessment of English.

The research involved using an e-assessment system to mark a number of famous speeches and selection of texts from famous 20th century authors, to establish what grades would have been given had they been submitted as a piece of work.

The system which is currently used in the USA to assess pupils' work, in the American equivalent to A level English, provided the following feedback when used to mark Churchill's famous "fight on the beaches" speech.

It stated that the work was too repetitive and graded it as below average. The same could be said for authors Ernest Hemingway who the computer dismissed as having a lack of care in style of writing and vocabulary, and William Golding who was marked as having inaccurate and erratic sentence structure.
