Assessing Assessment - Politics or Progress
The National Education Trust (NET) and the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) have jointly called for a greater focus on teacher based assessment as part of formal assessment of students.
Although formalised external assessment would still be used at the end of compulsory education, a greater focus on teacher based assessment would be used by schools working together supported by a cadre of Chartered Assessors, prior to this stage. These changes would be paid for by reinvesting some of the £700m each year spent on external examinations in professional development for teachers.
The CIEA welcomes the report, entitled - Assessing Assessment - Politics or progress, and the stimulus it gives to the debate about current issues.
The report in particular, looked into the importance of the role of the Chartered Educational Assessor (CEA) and the proposal to have a CEA within a school or college to provide expert support and improve internal assessment practice. The CIEA continues to work closely with stakeholders to improve the quality of assessment within schools and colleges.
The report also suggests that the prime responsibility for assessment should be restored to schools and colleges through initial and continuing professional development for teachers.

The role of the institute is to improve the quality of assessment by providing members access to training, qualifications and resources to improve their understanding of assessment practice. We have launched a new online CPD resource for teachers to help them develop their knowledge and understanding of assessment practice as well as training for the role of Chartered Educational Assessor.
