The Institute of Educational Assessors (IEA) has been granted Chartered status from The Privy Council. The accolade comes in recognition of the efforts of the IEA to have the practice of assessment recognised as a professional activity, with separate skills and competencies to teaching that are fundamental to effective teaching and learning.

Kathleen Tattersall, Chair of the IEA commented, "I am delighted that the Institute of Educational Assessors has been granted its Charter a mere fifteen months since its launch in May 2006. Our members will welcome this recognition of their professionalism, expertise and skills.

The Charter demonstrates the importance of assessment to all those who assess, to the learners to whom they are accountable and to the wider community. The Charter can also be seen as a means of raising standards, by enshrining the principles of good assessment practice into every day assessment. It is a good day for learners and for the education system as a whole."

Those who are conferred with the title Chartered Educational Assessor will possess the skills to assess at the highest level and will be the standard bearers of the integrity of the profession. Members will be delighted at the possibility of becoming not only Members or Fellows, but also at the opportunity to become a Chartered Educational Assessor.
