CIEA announces new Chair - John Dunford
One of the leading education campaigners of the last decade has been appointed chair of the CIEA.
John Dunford, former general secretary of professional body the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), will hold the post for one year initially.
Dunford, 64, has been a member of the institute since its inception and is a long-standing supporter of the chartered assessor concept. He said one major task for the next 12 months would be to establish the institute as an independent body after the closure of QCDA.
"It will be a challenge both financially and organisationally," he said. "But it is vital for the assessment community that we carry out this transition successfully and emerge with a stronger and bigger institute."
Another important move would be to increase membership so that "everyone involved in the work of assessment, whether in schools, colleges or exam boards or independently, recognises the importance of the institute, its work and will want to join as a member."
Campaign-wise, he indicated that improving understanding of the value of teacher-led assessment would be a key area of focus. He said: "I have always believed that the qualifications structure should place greater importance on the professional judgement of teachers and lecturers, and the role of the CIEA is vital in increasing the trust in teachers to assess to rigorous standards."
Dunford, a former headteacher, led ASCL for 12 years before stepping down in summer 2010. During his tenure, he was adept at using the media to raise the association's profile, bringing it significant influence among ministers and policymakers. Since leaving, he has taken on a role as chair of the not-for-profit body Whole Education and led an independent review into the role of the children's commissioner for England.
