Chartered Educational Assessor Definition: An individual who will apply the highest professional skills and judgements to assure the quality of assessment and thereby sustain and improve confidence in the standard and consistency of assessment (Source: Report on Consultation on the Concept of Chartered Educational Assessor)

The CIEA was granted its Royal Charter by the Privy Council in 2007. This was a profoundly important event as it endorsed our objective of professionalising the process of assessment and enabled the CIEA to offer a structured world class programme of continuing professional development (CPD). Our Charter, together with the Chartered Educational Assessor (CEA) programme, puts assessment on a par with professional activities in other fields such as engineering, HR and accountancy.

Between April 2006 and September 2007 the CIEA ran a Chartered Educational Assessor (CEA) pilot to trial the effectiveness of this initiative. The pilot accredited professionals who met the criteria at the highest level of the CIEA Professional Framework.

In the pilot exercise positive impact was noted by both the schools and the chartered assessors, on:

  • changing/improving teachers' attitudes to assessment
  • increasing the use of day-to-day assessment
  • improving the assessment expertise and confidence of staff, specifically in their ability to prepare and conduct assessments and provide feedback.

All of the CEAs believed that assessment practices had improved and that staff perceptions of assessment had changed - with only one exception. To read the Report in full, click here.
