Meet our people

If you become a member of the Institute, you will be joining a first class team of professionals who have been tasked with developing and delivering our strategic vision.

How assessment helps your teaching

IEA Launch Event

Assessment plays an integral part in the education process, providing feedback on progress to students at every stage of their development. However, the practice of assessment can also help you as a teacher to develop your skills and potential as a professional.

Assessing provides you with a different perspective

Being an examiner, moderator or marker will not only improve your skills in the classroom, it will also enhance the professional opportunities available to you in other areas.

As part of an assessment team, you have access to information  relating specifically to your subject specialism. You will also have access to what the candidate needs to fulfil in order to maximise grades. You can then use that information in your school or college for the benefit of your candidates.

You will become more aware of the important issues such as the use of effective language, how a mark scheme is developed and applied and the distinction between acceptable and unacceptable answers.

Assessing provides you with wider opportunities

You will be afforded opportunities to exchange ideas and share experiences with colleagues who are all experts in the same subject area as you. You will be able to resolve particular issues that you may have thought applied only in your circumstance.

You may also be given the opportunity to add to periodicals or even texts thereby adding to your CV. You may be given the chance to present a training course, adding to your CV even more.

Assessing provides you with a career opportunity

A strong background as an examiner, moderator or marker could give you an added bonus over somebody else at interview, support your application or help you advance your career. There are many opportunities for careers outside the classroom involved directly with assessment, for example with the awarding bodies.

Assessing allows you to influence the examination or test process itself

As an examiner, moderator or marker you will be expected to feed back comments about the nature of the questions, the application of the mark scheme and whether you think the examination or test is fair to students.

More senior examiners, moderators and markers can become directly involved in the production of examination and test questions.
