OLM Pilot Training Events 2009
The Oral Language Modifier (OLM) is a role created to provide a reasonable adjustment in examinations for candidates who require a level of language support beyond that provided by a reader. The events in 2009 were held in York, Leeds, Stratford, London and Bristol. In total 107 delegates were trained in the processes of modifying examinations for those who may require this level of support.
The CIEA ran and organised five training events in March and April 2009. The format was similar to that in 2008, but there have been amendments, as one would expect in any pilot.
The structure of the day looked at the following issues:
- Preparing the learner to become a candidate.
- Conducting the examination and modifying the grammar of the carriage language without invalidating the examination. This included simplifying the language structure of the carrier language, avoiding the use of the passive voice and avoiding devaluing the impact of the command verb.
- Feeding back to those who need to know: the teachers in the institution, the SENCO, the examiner, the awarding body and JCQ
After each input, there was an opportunity afforded to each delegate to use the new information with which they were provided and putting into practice newly learned skills.
Each delegate was assessed on how well they showed an understanding of the issues in each of the above areas, a letter was sent to each delegate, along with an attendance certificate. Details of the assessments were sent to JCQ for monitoring purposes.
Evaluations
Finally, delegates were encouraged to feed back to the CIEA team on the outcomes of the day. Below is a list of some of the comments that were made:
Extremely useful and enjoyable
It was helpful to ask questions as they arose and that they were answered
All issues were explained very clearly
I really enjoyed the day.
I was terrified at the beginning but now feel much more confident
I found the whole day enjoyable and informative
The tutors were very accessible and knowledgeable
I valued the way all members of the CIEA team made themselves available for discussion
Excellent information delivered in an interesting and well-structured way.
Thank you for providing a very professional and impressive course
Fantastic! I am no longer scared to alter things!
The course fulfilled its aims brilliantly. It clarified the expectations of the OLM role and supported us well in the realism of carrying out the role
